FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL: Magnus Opus and Exigence > Modifications and Alternatives to Caffeine: Understanding the Biochemistry and Synthesis

Audience: This will be geared towards students taking AP chemistry, but anyone interested in caffeine can also follow along and understand.

Context: While most people are family with only caffeine, variations to caffeine are quite popular in the workout industry. The two most popular supplements are PURENERGY (brand name for a cocrystal between caffeine and pterostilbene) and theacrine (slightly different structure to caffeine). These supplements have different biochemical interactions, which will be explored in this paper.

Purpose: The purpose is to teach high school students how simple variations in chemical structure can cause vastly different biochemical interactions. The one-step synthesis of the cocrystal will also be explained in an understandable and reproducible format. This can also help anyone looking for healthier and more effective alternatives to caffeine/coffee. Lastly, I hope that this paper can make more students interested in majoring in biochemistry.

E, I am glad you are taking on this AP project. And, yes, to help students anticipate the joys of biochemistry.

Can you use some illustrations? I say this in part because of your sign-off name. If not, see what else is out there to pique interest. Even Khan Academy videos can be part of the materials you suggest for this set of curriculum materials. Think: multi-media.

You can also use humor, I think, to address your audience. Handled with care, this style choice can be a good way to connect with your audience.

You can be the Bill Nye of biochemistry.
