FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL: Magnus Opus and Exigence > A Resident Assistant's Guide to Using Helping Skills

Audience: This document will be targeted at Resident Assistants and Resident Life professional staff.

Context: A major responsibility emphasized in Resident Assistants' job descriptions is to develop meaningful relationships with residents. As a third-year Resident Assistant, I personally understand the difficulties surrounding this expectation. Many Resident Assistants do not know how to help residents in emotionally charged situations or how to develop relationships with residents who they barely see. Helping skills will help Resident Assistants develop more meaningful relationships with residents and prepare them for emotional situations.

Purpose: This guide will include how to use helping skills, when to use specific helping skills, and knowledge surrounding helping skills. Helping skills will teach Resident Assistants how to phrase questions during emotional situations that will not only help residents, but also help Resident Assistants obtain information they need to write an Incident Report. Resident Assistants can refer to this guide before interacting with residents.

Document type: This document will be a sectioned guide. The following are the tentative sections: Introduction, Exploration Stage, Insight Stage, Action Stage, Integrating the Three Stages, and Conclusion. Every section, except for the Introduction and Conclusion, will include detailed, realistic examples.

Design/format: This document will be heavily sectioned. It will include lists, definitions (which may benefit from bold and underlined text), and dialogue examples.

Citation style: This document will include APA citations and natural language referrals.

SMB,

As an RA myself, I think that this document would be wonderful for new RAs who have not had too much experience dealing with these situations. I would love to read it when you finish it!

This document is very important as mental health is prominent amongst college students. RA's are some of the most accessible mentors who can guide students who experience mental health issues. Therefore, RA's would need to know how to deal with it! I cannot wait to read this!

I think this would be really important to distribute to RAs and even all UMD staff that come in contact with students frequently and would help them form better connections with students. I think this would be a fantastic guide to read!

I love the idea of this guide particularly because as a student, when I was a freshman, I was going through an emotionally charged situation and beyond my close friends, my RA was a great source or guidance and a safe place for me to ask for advice from. I'm not sure if he/she was personally well-equipped to handle situations like mine, or if he/she was trained. But it would be a great idea for RA's to go through some kind of training or course that at least gave them tips and help on how to help their residents in difficult situations. I really appreciated the efforts and guidance of my RA that year :)

Look at your audience response!

One important feature would be to provide sample dialogue including what NOT TO SAY.

Do you know about the Ring Theory? Could you adapt some of this?
