FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL: Magnus Opus and Exigence > An Overview of Clinical Research Protocols for UMMS CCRU Research Projects

Audience: New research assistants that have been accepred into Dr.Tran's RAP-EMCC Critical Care Research Program at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Context: This research is important, as it allows for doctors to collect information regarding comfort and care that patient's receive while they are intubated and placed on a ventilator. This information can then be used to refine protocols that are followed for pain and comfort control in the Multi-Trauma ICU and Neuro-Trauma ICU units at UMMS. There is also another project that aims to study whether or not GFAP can be indicative of cognitive decline while patients are placed on venovenous ECMO for pulmonary support. Results from this study can allow for physicians to change their plan of care and to be more knowledgeable about what to expect when the patinet is taken off of the VV-ECMO support.

Purpose: To familiarize research associates with the details of the study, so that they can effectively inform the patient and ensure that the consent is valid and without any coercion or uncertainties. Additionally, the guide will outline all of the necessary paperwork that the RA must obtain for the patient to successfully be enrolled in the study, consistent with the expectations of the UMMS IRB. Many RAs who have not had patient interactions are unsure as to what they need to tell the patient, or how they should respond in certain situations. This guide will alleviate their stress and inform them of the expectations when speaking to patients and their families, who are in a vulnerable state while in the CCRU, Multi-Trauma ICU, or Neuro-Trauma ICU.

Document Type: Informative, split into 3 sections based on the three different studies

As we talked about together, this is a very good plan and I am glad you see the division into three, as well as wanting to repeat a pattern in these sections.

Teaching new colleagues about HIPAA is really key here. This website is one place to refer them to BUT to also summarize some of this information.
