FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL: Magnus Opus and Exigence > A Literature Review on the Tendency of Physicians to Not Believe Female Patients

Audience: Women who may be experiencing a chronic illness but are not receiving treatment from medical professionals that downplay symptoms.

Context: Female patients are consistently less satisfied with their healthcare experience than male patients. This is most commonly due to the fact that doctors, both male and female, tend to not believe women's pain or assume it is due to other factors, without diagnostic testing.

Purpose: Although this issue is extremely common, not many people know it's happening. It is extremely important to spread awareness so that female patients can get the care they deserve and need.

P, important area about clinician bias. I think one job of this document is to establish the prevalence of this problem. Part of this could be your general claim, supported by analysis of several research articles. I would also look for a meta analysis.

I suspect, though, that narrowing the scope will help you and, indeed, explore the literature. For example, you could narrow to reported pain and women, women in obstetrical conditions, or area of cardiac events and women.

This is a good article on implicit bias as deep background.

And, this on gender BUT in a specific disease context.

Hi PH,

I love the topic and I think it is super important. However, just piggy backing off of what Dr.Shea said above, maybe you might want to narrow the scope? I would recommend looking at the tendency of physicians to ignore their black female patients especially.
