FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL: Magnus Opus and Exigence > Direct to Consumer Genetic Testing: Picking the Right Test for You

Audience
This document is intended to inform and guide consumers interested in purchasing a direct to consumer genetic test, such as those offered by 23andMe. Direct to consumer genetic testing is now available to the general public and this document is aimed at those without a scientific background, to help them understand what type of test they are purchasing and how to interpret their results.

Context
Direct to consumer genetic testing has become increasingly popular in recent years due to plummeting DNA sequencing costs and rising dissatisfaction with traditional medical practices. The entire purpose of direct to consumer genetic testing is that the involvement of a healthcare professional is not required at any point throughout the process. While this offers certain advantages, people may be confused by the process and feel unable to interpret the test results on their own. Thus a comprehensive overview of not only the test itself but also the biological background of the test and genetics in general may help people throughout the process.

Purpose
The purpose of this document is to educate people on basic genetic concepts, provide a comprehensive overview of the types of genetic tests available, and walk people through how to interpret their results. The document will also provide background information on direct to consumer testing, including how companies analyze consumer’s DNA samples and how companies are regulated. In all, the document will help people choose which direct to consumer test is right for them and how to analyze their test results.

Document Type
This will be an informative document supported by a review of scientific literature. It will include screenshots of hypothetical test results and links to direct to consumer genetic testing companies.

Design/Format
The document will be split into three general sections: basic genetic concepts, the types of genetic tests available, and interpretation of test results. Each section will also have subsections and be supported by scientific literature.

Citation Style
I will use APA citations to cite the scientific literature and natural language combined with hyperlinks to the specific direct to consumer genetic testing companies.

G, fascinating and important area to guide people in.

As written, is likely too large to complete in page limits. How can you narrow? If you write this guide as written, you would need to touch on many topics, lightly, with perhaps good referral inks to help them seek more information.

Another way to focus is on a Pro / Con approach. Have you looked at the cons? This compare / contrast structure might be a helpful way to "right size" this important inquiry.

Finally, you timing is right: holidays are when people give the gift of DNA testing, especially for the Ancestry website/databases.
