FINAL PROJECT:Structures and Arguments > Leishmanias: Why we should research neglected tropical diseases?

Beginning: I will begin my document using a shocking statistic. Most likely this will relate to the world wide incidence of Leishmaniasis and the amount of funding Leishmania research has received in recent years.
Middle: The body of my work will describe how incidence of Leishmaniasis is increasing (possibly due to climate change) and how resources need to be invested in Leishmaniasis and scientists should consider studying Leishmania. I will use this section of my document to lay out the facts (economic, epidemiologic, etc.) about Leishmaniasis and Leishmanis and why more attention should be paid to it.
End: At the end of my document I would like to encourage scientists working in other areas to apply their work to Leishmania research. This is especially relevant for primary investigators who are just setting up a laboratory. Funding may follow an increasing demand for resources for Leishmania research. I would like to acknowledge at this point that research into other diseases is also critical.
Logos: 1) Leishmania incidence rates, 2) Data on funding for neglected tropical diseases (including Leishmaniasis), 3) Responses of others to the need for research into neglected tropical diseases, 4) Lack of reliable diagnostic tools and treatments.
Pathos: Research into tropical illnesses, like Leishmaniasis, often lag behind diseases that affect more developed countries. The treatments for Leishmaniasis are often ineffective.
Ethos: Credibility of researchers, such as Jorge Alvar, PhD and Naomi Aronson, PhD, and of organizations, such as WHO and PolicyCures.
Structure: My structure will rely on the analysis of relevant data on funding and on the descriptions of what is lacking in our understanding of Leishmaniasis.
Goal: To persuade others to fund and participate in Leishmaniasis research.

V,
Good plan. Did you see this? You can use this as part of your conclusion when you shift briefly to the policy aspect. Also, look at what the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are doing -- heroes, really, about raising the profile of tropical disease work.
