FINAL PROJECT:Structures and Arguments > The Importance of Wrap-around Care with Savior Children

Beginning: Describe a case study of an actual family who chose to conceive a savior child such as the Nash Family. Or use quotes from the novel “My Sister’s Keeper” and provide a brief description of the novel to show the audience the potential negative effects creating savior children can have on both the donor and nondonor siblings.

Middle: 1)Background information on the topic including the current state of regulation in the US as well as the background of wrap around care 2)Highlight important findings in research and case studies of families that chose to conceive savior children.

End: Acknowledge the fact that the US may never implement a regulatory policy to prevent the harmful risks to savior children

LOGOS: 1)Background on the current state of regulation in the UK and Australia including the lack of regulation in the US 2)Present the different case studies 3)Explain psychosocial risk that savior children could experience 4)Explain wrap around care and connect it back to the issue of savior children (this will then lead to the recommendation I will make to medical students)

PATHOS: 1) Use quotes from Packman’s study of savior children who felt that the donation process felt threatening 2) Use quotes from families who have successfully conceived savior children

ETHOS: I will be highlighting Wendy Packman’s research as well as many other peer reviewed journal articles

STRUCTURE: This will be a medical seminar paper so the structure will be more formal. The first part of my paper will highlight the background information of the topic. The second part of the paper will explain my goal.

GOAL: To inform medical students about the issue of savior children and how they should be better informed about wrap around care to prevent the harmful risks that savior children could experience

R, good idea to suggest that longer term wrap-around care is important here. What is the status now of consent for minors and helping a sibling? I think you will need to look at the bone marrow donation literature and perhaps the kidney/liver donation literature. Then, you might use that consent frame work to discuss the special case of savior children.

That information should appear early on, as a definition/description essential to your presentation.
