FINAL PROJECT:Structures and Arguments > Quaking over Graduate Schools

Beginning: a lot of earthquake puns establishing the struggle of continuing an education after undergraduate school
After completing their undergraduate degree, many earth science majors are left quaking when it comes to thinking about furthering their education. Students may find themselves at fault for not preparing for graduate school, yet want to participate in ground-breaking research.
And then I’ll tie it in to my own personal struggle to transition into the middle

Middle:
1. discuss the difference between a masters degree and a PhD, and the opportunities associated with both
2. explore the seismology opportunities at University of Nevada Reno
3. explore the seismology opportunities at University of California Santa Barbara
4. explore the seismology opportunities at the Colorado School of Mines

End: I will analyze the best choices for me based on my previous analysis of schools and degrees, but also recommend a few other paths for interested earth science students. I might also link in a few additional resources so students can start their own personal search

LOGOS: information on different graduate schools, reports on earnings and jobs from people who got a masters vs a PhD

PATHOS: advice from graduate students who pursued a geology degree

ETHOS: advice from graduate students, papers from seismology experts at each school, information published by the school’s admissions offices

STRUCTURE: A guide, Modular with sections as following: the difference between degrees (schooling, time needed, etc), the different opportunities for each degree, and the opportunities at University of Nevada Reno, University of California Santa Barbara, the Colorado School of Mines.

GOAL: guide myself and others through exploring post-undergrad seismology opportunities, specifically masters and PhD programs, at a few west-coast universities

J, for all of these schools, you will need to focus on the out-of-state aspect. Also, be hyperaware of the funding differences between an MS and PhD program.

You might need to register as an applicant to secure access to closed parts of their websites....you may find interesting differences/details about the research statements and other application essays that will be important for your analysis.

Also, is there a women in seismology group or woman in geology that you want to become aware of?
