FINAL PROJECT:Structures and Arguments > Best Practices for the Studying College Student: A Psychological Perspective (in the subject line of post).
Really good plan, R. I think can make seven work, specially if you combine some that share attributes. Is that possible. Your shape is an elongated lemon! A pickle or cucumber? :)
I will ask later if you can share with me, so to help other students.
Re your opening scene, you can use initials or a false name for identity protection. Thank her, for me, for generosity.

Beginning:
I plan to hook the audience with a narrative illustrating a scenario where a student needed to study a massive amount of information, but did not know where to start. I will use a real-life example from a friend who has had this situation come up in the past. After I describe a scenario, I will explain the problem with students study habits. Lastly, I will outline the 7 study strategies that I will be describing in the middle of the document.
Middle:
If I have room in my document, I will be describing 7 study strategies. If I find that the document becomes too long, I will refer my readers to an annotated bibliography at the end of my document which will consist of additional strategies.
For each study strategy, I will follow a specific pattern: describe the strategy and provide necessary definitions, briefly explain the research that supports the strategy, and suggest ways in which the strategy can be applied. All of this information will be adapted for a lay audience. I will incorporate user friendly referral sources to support their reading.
End:
I will end my document with a brief statement, similar to how we ended the coffee cup and rain garden memos. I will use this section to summarize my document and persuade the reader that they should use the strategies I suggested. Lastly, I will direct my reader to another source in the case that they would like to read more.
LOGOS:
Peer-reviewed articles on encoding specificity, distributed practice, the testing effect, interleaved practice, drawing, and levels of processing. The American Psychological Association is a strong referral source for additional reading on effective study strategies. Science Daily is another source that is supported by research and user friendly. I may use this source to help describe the research behind each study strategy.
PATHOS:
I will open the document with a scenario describing a time when a student needed help studying. I am also considering using examples of students who have had success using a study strategy.
ETHOS:
Credibility of founders in memory and cognition, such as Alan Baddeley, Endel Tulving, and Fergus Craik. Also, the credibility of the American Psychological Association.
STRUCTURE:
I open with a scenario, outline research, and illustrate how to apply the study strategy.
GOAL:
Inform/guide about effective study strategies.
