FINAL PROJECT:Structures and Arguments > Informative Guide to CHBE at UMD

Beginning: I will hook the audience with a few facts about the career pathways and jobs available for people with a B.S. in CHBE as the audience consists of prospective or current CHBE undergraduates. Then, I will illustrate the rigor of the core curriculum by providing a personal anecdote about my own initial struggles and adjustments in my sophomore year. I will also talk about how I recently struggled in selecting electives which tailor to my career goal of becoming a doctor. The main definitions and descriptions will be regarding the difference between the core curriculum and technical electives and why both are important. Ultimately, I will propose that the guide will help guide CHBE students at UMD in reaching their potentials by maximizing their academic success and tailoring their coursework to their career goals.
Middle: Lemon shaped. I will first provide detailed information into the career pathways available with a CHBE degree. Then, I will provide information on the core curriculum and what I would do if I could go back in time. Third, I will provide information about the various department-approved technical electives for each of the career pathways I described earlier. Finally, I will provide information on additional qualifications and post-undergraduate opportunities in higher education if that is a desired goal before looking into the job market right after graduation.
End: I will add on my process for selecting technical electives aligning with me being a pre-med. In addition, I will provide information on tutoring resources and career planning resources within the CHBE department and advise the audience to seek help as needed. I will acknowledge that the guide did not cover every topic in extensive detail and to visit the UMD CHBE website and/or schedule an appointment with an advisor as needed.
LOGOS: CHBE undergraduates have amongst the lowest GPAs so the core curriculum is very rigorous and can be overwhelming. CHBE graduates have one of the highest starting salaries so the tough coursework is by design to prepare students for the work that lies ahead. Technical electives are by design free choice so that students can pick courses which align to their desired career specializations.
PATHOS: My personal anecdotes will connect with the audience and assure them that an actual student who went through 5 semesters of CHBE is writing this guide. The hope evoked from my anecdote about making the transition from freshman year’s struggles to doing well in later semesters.
ETHOS: Overlap with PATHOS.
Structure: Some of telling stories but mainly divide complex information into reasonable parts and illustrating concepts.
Goal: To inform, advise, and support in tasks as a CHBE junior myself.

K, a peer-to-peer guide is important here. I like that you will conclude with ideas about course selection for the pre-med in your situation but you recognize that this goal is less likely to be held by many in your audience.

I think the document will be dated, so be sure to include dates in perhaps a header or footer.

How will you share this valuable guide? Club? To advising staff?
