Abstract: This article is meant to help people who are interested in becoming scuba certified, whether for their own enjoyment or for their careers. The article acts more as a guide using information from major professional scuba certification courses and divers along with my personal experience with becoming open water scuba certified. The paper starts off describing the wonder and the since of adventure that scuba diving brings, before talking about some of the more practical uses that becoming scuba certified can bring. The guide then goes into detail about what to expect when attempting to go through with the certification process. This article will also go over some very simple definitions of important scuba diving terms and equipment that are essential for any new diver to become familiar with. Safety was highly stressed in this guide, and for good reason. Scuba diving can be an extremely fun sport to get in to, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t come without its fair share of danger. It is important for new divers to make sure they are comfortable in the water and are getting the proper instruction before they attempt to scuba dive. Before closing, I talk about the potential benefits of becoming scuba diving, bringing up some of my experiences while also talking about hypothetical situations where scuba diving could be important for people in different professional fields. In closing, I continue to talk about the amazing opportunity that becoming open water certified can bring people along with the contact information of many credible scuba diving certification companies.
Reader’s Response: I’m interested in knowing what professions that having my scuba diving certification would actually benefit me? I’m sitting here in my office and reading this guide and I really can’t think of one real profession other than “scuba diving instructor” that would require them to get their certification. I can’t stand being in this office anymore and I would really like some more information on what field I could get into that would have opportunities to go scuba diving instead of sitting at my desk staring at a computer all day…
