FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > A Migraine Sufferers' Guide to Dealing With Migraines
R -- how will you handle the homeopathic remedies? Perhaps you can divide a section into Natural/Alternative therapies? Homeopathy, as you know, raises the interesting phenomenon of the placebo effect. Let's chat briefly about this.
Back to the medical approach, will you look at other classes of medications? Just tryptans? You can focus on tryptans but then use metadiscourse to direct patients to other places to learn about cafergot, etc.

This patient guide is targeted towards migraine patients, particularly those who have been recently diagnosed with the headaches. Migraines are a relatively common disorder that is most likely due to genetics. Scientists know little about the pathophysiology of migraine headaches. Triptans are a class of drug approved for use in migraines in adults over the age of 17, but they can be ineffective and expensive. Neurologists often do not go farther than to prescribe a Triptan for the patient and advise a regular sleep schedule. Migraines can impact daily life and make participation in normal activities difficult or even impossible. This patient guide will outline the prevalence of migraines in both children and adults and then discuss the use of pharmaceuticals, homeopathic remedies, and management techniques. This guide will try to provide as comprehensive a review of migraine treatments and management techniques as possible.
READER PROFILE
The reader will be a new migraine sufferer between the ages of 14 and 35, and will most likely be female (as most migraines occur in females). She will be concerned about how she is going to be able to handle migraines and still go about daily life.
READER RESPONSE
I’m glad that I’m getting a guide that goes more into depth than what doctors tell me, but I’m skeptical about a lot of the techniques in it. I don’t believe in homeopathic medicine and I think that a lot of homeopathic remedies aren’t real. So, I’m hesitant to try them. I believe that if pharmaceuticals can’t help us, then nothing can. I am also worried that if doctors and scientists can’t cure migraines, then there’s no way that alternative medicine could help me.
