Abstract (WC=249): I am writing this document after almost two years of work on the Maryland Hillel Shabbat Crew, the last seven months of which I have been a manager. Since this job is intergral to the Hillel community, every member of Maryland Hillel Shabbat Crew needs to know his/her responsibilities and have a basic understanding of Jewish laws (halachot) in order to do the job correctly. Give that Shabbat Crew is facing the impending graduation of many seasoned members and managers with this knowledge this document will be used to explain everything a Shabbat Crew member or manager may need to know to be an effective employee. I will begin with an explanation of basic halachot for Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath). I then will delve into the responsibilities and expectations of a Shabbat Crew member. This portion will give an in-depth job description followed by an explanation of the current payment system. After this I will provide a guide for each meal and activity (set-up and cleanup) a crew member will work. In the latter part of this document, I will lay out the additional information required to be a Shabbat Crew manager. This section includes suggestions for how to be an effective leader, extra responsibilities for managers (e.g. submitting information for payment), and which Hillel staff members are helpful in certain scenarios. With this manual, Maryland Hillel Shabbat Crew will be able handle the transition of losing many knowledgeable members without losing the ability to do the job correctly. Reader’s profile: A new member of Shabbat Crew who does not have a strong religious background and is unaware of many halachot. Response: I am surprised by the number of rules I need to remember and I am overwhelmed by the task of having to do this. However, having this manual should make this easier. The job itself doesn’t seem to be too difficult considering that I can always refer to this manual my manager if I am lost. I’m excited to start working here because I know this job does a great service for the Maryland Hillel community.
