FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > An Examination of the Cooperation of Environmentalists, Engineers, and Politicians on the Topic of Safe Drinking Water Supply for People in Poor Areas

ABSTRACT: While some developed countries’ national leaders are making their goals as to achieve qualitative and quantitative status of their water bodies, developing countries, such as Kosovo and Peru, lack basic monitoring of any kind of water pollutants, and as a consequence, human health could be at risk. The concept of all people have the right to have access to drinking water in quantities and of a quality to their basic need was raised during 1977 Mar del Plata conference, and since then, international community such as United Nations Environment Program started to convene meetings and funding to help people in poor areas who do not even have clean drinking water. This article develops with the concepts introduction of exciting water supply technologies and case studies of drinking water supply situation in Peru, Kosovo, Nicaragua, and Hodurans: 1) Environmental science group AguaClara from Cornell University addresses the need of sustainable municipal scale water treatment, and more than 40,000 Hodurans benefit from AguaClara’s program and 2) An engineering group, Without Boarder (EWB) from the University of Maryland, College Park, partners with disadvantaged communities in Peru to improve local people’s drinking water quality of life, they designed the water tanks. This article introduces how environmentalists, engineers, governments, NGOs, and other institutes can work together to improve drinking water supply situation in the poor developing areas, and how college students as a group can contribute to this process.

READER’S PROFILE: A imagine my readers as college students majoring in environmental science and are willing to contribute to the process of safe drinking water supply.

READER’S RESPONSE: I think that the current data of drinking water supply and water requirements are vague in those poor areas. We need more specific data to analysis the situation. In addition, governments’ supports are necessary in giving you the chances to do the experiments and testing the effects of water tanks and plants locally. I would like to know how you could find a way to achieve the cooperation of foreign environmentalists, engineers, international institutes, and local governments.

F -- I would still narrow the scope. Taking on the politics of water is a huge and complex undertaking.

Despite the impasse noted by your "reader" several small groups are solving off-grid water problems. I think this should be your focus: several cases of this successful work.

Formal APA citation seems to be the best for this project. Let's chat briefly about scaling back.
