FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > Organ Transplant: The Opt In System

Abstract: This seminar paper outlines the procedure behind opt in organ transplantation for donors and recipients. According to JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, organ transplants in the US undergo a rigorous process from selection to procedure. These steps are often very difficult for donors and recipients alike and thus require doctors to guide the patients through the ordeal. This article continues with the issues regarding the Opt In system and what new improvements doctors and medical-legal experts are trying to make with the Opt IN system so that it is more efficient. Various case studies including what to do if a patient’s family rejects the donor’s organ are also included. To conclude the seminar paper, the opt out system of organ transplantation will be briefly explained to depict the systems of other countries before stressing the importance of doctor patient communication in regards to transplantation.

Reader Profile: I imagine the reader to be a medical student who believes they will not be anywhere near the process of organ transplantation given the type of specialty they hope to work in. As a result, they are thus skeptical of the importance of medical students understanding the process unless directly involved.

Reader Response: I don’t really see why I need to know or even understand the process of organ transplantation given that I just want to be a primary care doctor for some patients at a private practice. But, I guess if my own patients were to require an organ transplant, I will at least need to be knowledgeable about how to direct them and help them along in the process. For that though, I will need some explanation on how to advise patients needing an organ transplant, preferably from a reputable source that doctors can vouch for.
