FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > Urban Modifications for Songbirds

Abstract: Songbirds rely on communication for breeding, making vocalization a crucial component affecting songbird populations. Urbanization has been proven to significantly alter bird habitat, which inevitably affects communication among songbirds. Various studies have shown that urbanization alters habitat requiring some songbird species to adapt their vocalization to effectively communicate. However, adaptations may not be beneficial to all songbird species, as larger birds are at an advantage since less energy is exerted. In this informational guide, I will address the issues with respect to songbird communication resulting from noise pollution in urban areas, as well as suggest some methods for reducing these barriers for songbird reproductive success and survival.

Reader Profile: The reader of this document will be human urban residents and local community groups that manage urban parks where these birds reside. Local governing bodies and organizations that manage parks will benefit from this, as they could enforce sound-reducing methods that will improve bird communication. This is a technical audience and will require parenthetical citations.

Reader Response: I did not understand that bird communities were affected by urbanization to the point where their breeding is affected. Since we want to these songbird species to thrive in our community we should take action to reduce the pressure they face with urban noise. The methods presented were strategies that were not considered before, and trying to incorporate these methods in our community would be beneficial to the birds as well as birders. Unfortunately, our budget may not be able to include these methods and we would not have money to allocate towards these projects/methods.
