FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > Biology and Fashion Design Working Hand and Hand

Abstract: A new intersection between biological sciences and fashion design is emerging. At MIT, fabric is being designed using bacteria that are sensitive to body temperature to allow for ventilation (BioLogic 2016). On the other hand, the military is designing body armor that will respond to the presence of chemicals to protect soldiers during chemical warfare (umass.edu 2016). There are many more fabrics that are being designed in order create clothing that is more sustainable and allow consumers to be more environmentally conscious. These revolutionary ideas are made possible because of the overlap in science and fashion design. As a candidate with a background in STEM science, the opportunity of merging this field of study with the industry of fashion will lead to advancements in apparel. Moreover, the potential that lies at the intersection between fashion design and STEM science will further maximized.

Reader’s Profile: I imagine admissions officers reading my paper and determining whether I am a good fit for their institution.

Reader’s Response: Well, this applicant seems to have a lot of expectation. Is this really what we are looking for at our institution? We thrive in the creativity our students bring and are more than willing to invest our resources into individuals that will bring contributions to the fashion industry. Does this applicant have what it takes to survive in the fashion industry? Will his ideas be able to grow and affect society in he way that he is claiming that it will? Is the fashion industry even ready and willing to accept this type of transition? He does have a strong background in the STEM science, which will definitely benefit him and his new outlook is actually refreshing. While I find his passion very interesting, I need to know more. Maybe my interview with him will help to settle things.

O, you are being realistic about this reader. Then, you can work hard to convince them that science can serve fashion design. You might want to close with the idea of STEM to STEAM. See more here:
