FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > Cannabis as a Potential Therapy for Cirrhosis

Abstract

The use of Cannabis sativa has received much traction for its therapeutic promise diseases that include, but are not limited to, mood and anxiety disorders, movement disorders like Parkinson’s, and pain in diseases like multiple sclerosis. More recently, Cannabis has shown even more therapeutic promise for its ability to target the endocannabinoid system, which is known to regulate functions of the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as play various roles in the pathophysiology of liver diseases. However, gaps in knowledge still remain about the full effects of cannabinoids on organs like the liver. Targeting cannabinoid receptors CB-1 and CB-2 has been shown to regulate normal liver function. Thus, this study aims to address the possible effectiveness of cannabis as a therapeutic agent for liver damage caused by starvation and chronic alcohol exposure. In mice models, anorexia nervosa and alcohol abuse will be simulated by forced starvation and ethanol exposure, respectively. The liver will be directly observed through histological staining for fibrosis and Western blotting for hepatic proteins. In addition, liver function will be assessed by testing for liver enzymes and metabolic byproducts, evaluating metabolic efficiency, and measuring the liver to body weight ratio. The results in this study will establish the effectiveness of Cannabis sativa in treating liver damage caused by starvation and chronic alcohol exposure. Therefore, this study will clarify the potential uses of Cannabis sativa as a treatment for liver damage, opening the possibility for its use in a wider range of therapeutic applications.

Reader’s Response

READER’S PROFILE: The reader can be an committee of researchers listening to a research proposal.

READER’S RESPONSE: I imagine that any proposal review committee will would be skeptical at first, but I hope this abstract and the rest of the document could ease their worries and open their minds. I think the audience would want to know more behind the background about what this is a worthwhile topic and how the experiment will be carried through.

VOICE: I am writing for a technical audience. Therefore, the document should be written in third person and stay in a distant/objective tone.

CITATION: I will follow a formal citation style. I will use in-text citations by naming first authors and years, followed by a bibliography at the end of the document.

S, good plan with these two comments:

1) be sure to note that the research was restricted for more than 40 years, however, research activity is quickly responded to more openness to the uses of these plant molecules.

2) starvation? I am not sure how this fits, unless you mean that very alcohol-compromised people often forego food, for drinking. Is this what you mean? Be sure to make this clear OR focus more on the hypothesis that will look at liver damage associated with alcohol consumption.
