Existing research has described the involvement of extracellular vesicles in numerous common diseases. To better understand a broad range of disease progression, the impacts and mechanism of extracellular vesicles needs to be further investigated. From heart disease to osteoarthritis, extracellular vesicles carry various different cargos, from nucleic acid to small proteins, that may further the disease. This review explores the broad range of disease that incorporates extracellular vesicles, and the potential of extracellular vesicles as therapeutics. Extracellular vesicles, due to their capacity to carry cargo, are ideal in drug delivery. Since secretion of extracellular vesicles is very common in human cells, it is important to explore the therapeutic uses. The therapeutic efficacy of vesicles may depend on the source of the vesicle and the cargo with in the vesicle. Further research is needed to determine all the multifaceted effects of extracellular vesicles, including the potential as a future treatment.
Reader’s profile: A drug delivery researcher in a clinical setting reviewing this paper.
Reader’s perspective: How significant of a contribution do extracellular vesicles make in disease progression? How will this type of therapy compare to treatments currently available for various diseases? I would have to do more investigation into extracellular vesicles.
