FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > Improving Simulations of Andrew Hoovers TES Microcalorimeter Sensor Array

Abstract
The Rokkasho Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing Facility in Japan reprocesses 8 metric tons of plutonium per year. Measuring the ratios of isotopes in spent nuclear fuel is important for efficiency of facilities like Rokkasho, and nuclear proliferation efforts. Transition Edge Sensor Micro-calorimeters provide a promising method to increase the accuracy of these measurements via. Plutonium isotope gamma ray spectroscopy. A model of the plutonium source and TES detector has already been programed but needs work before it can be useful. The model uses a linear combination of isotopes which must be validated, as well as improving optimization of importance cells. Once these improvements have been made the model must be compared to actual data to make sure no physics is missing from the model. A second model of combining pixel elements in the TES detector has also been programmed, but only for one peak. In reality up to twenty peaks can exist in a 20keV range, so the code must be improved to simulate twenty peaks. Only 3 forms of fit have been tested using this code, other better forms might exist and this should be explored. More validation is always important for simulations like these two, especially when the accuracy is low, as is the case here.

Reader’s Profile:
I find it hard to believe the next intern would not want a document with key points on how previous code works and areas to improve. Perhaps they are better at Monte Carlos than I am so they feel that they can make better imrpovements than I suggest, but they would still be interested in background information on the current code.
Reader’s Response:
I have formal training in Monte Carlo’s, unlike Jacob so I don’t need his guidance because I already know better than him about improvements to simulations.

J, if you use section heads to make clear the material covered in each section, then the Monte Carlo expert can glide over that to other material.

Also, the non MC literate intern will appreciate having this guide.

Looks like a real document for a real reader, who if non MC literate, will be so grateful for your workplace documentation!
