FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > Concussions: A history and treatment guide

ABSTRACT: Concussions afflict one in four adults and one in five children across America. They can occur from anything that involves a head collision, including sports and vehicular accidents. This patient guide aims to address ways to identify and treat concussions as well as how our understanding of concussions has evolved over time. A concussion is a general term for a brain injury that ranges in severity from mild to severe. Concussions can impact mood, sleep, cognitive abilities, and emotional regulation. Based on the severity of the concussion, the degree of the symptoms can also vary. Unless the concussion is severe enough to be detected using an MRI, the diagnosis is based on the patient’s self-reported symptoms. While the recommended treatment used to be to remove all stimulus and allow the brain to completely rest, as more research has been done on concussions, the treatment plan has evolved. Proper treatment now involves incorporating relaxing activities slowly, avoiding anything that causes additional pain. As someone caring for a concussed person, it is important to know warning signs to watch out for, proper methods of care, and what to expect in terms of their mood and behavior. The guide will begin with a thorough definition of a concussion, followed by a history of treatment and knowledge on concussions. A thorough discussion of symptoms, diagnosis criteria, treatment, and warning signs will follow to provide a thorough patient guide on concussions.

READER’S RESPONSE: This is informative and a nicely curated source. This one stop concussion information center is everything I will ever need to know about concussions and how to treat them. However, I don’t foresee a situation where I will ever need to use this. I don’t engage in activities that would put me at risk for a concussion, so why would I spend time reading this guide? Also, should I ever need information on concussions, it should all be on the internet.
