ABSTRACT: Effective communication in pharmacies is crucial to developing solid patient-pharmacist relationships and maximizing patient safety. However, many important aspects of communication need to be highlighted and enforced in order to provide optimal care to patients. Therefore, in this patient care-based guide, an exploration of pharmacology literature was performed so that pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students can provide the best care that they can to optimize patient safety levels. The first aspect of effective communication that is addressed is communication keys and error verifications. The second aspect of communication that is discussed is cultural differences. The third aspect that is addressed is maneuvering through difficult conversations and eliminating judgmental interactions. The end goal of this document is to improve patient-provider interactions between patients and pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in order to deliver the highest quality of care possible. Pharmacists are the last line of defense between a patient and the patient's treatment, so it is imperative to make sure that communication between the two parties is as productive and effective as possible.

READER'S PROFILE: I can imagine a person saying that the pharmacy field is not as deep as I am making it.
READER'S RESPONSE: Pharmacy is a multifaceted field that can present with many challenges. They have to deal with educating patients, cross checking other doctors', physician assistants', and dentists mistakes in order to make sure that the patient is undergoing a safe and proper treatment. There is a lot of room for miscommunication, especially in a high volume setting like a pharmacy. There are also many other communication barriers one has to think about, such as cultural barriers, and difficult conversations such as emergency contraceptives. Pharmacy communication is crucial for optimum patient health.
