The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents is increasing, and this rise in cases of diabetes presents a growing burden to the health of youth in the United States. However, relatively few comprehensive and youth-friendly guides exist for young people. Therefore, this patient guide will assist young people in managing their diabetes in order to live fuller and more independent lives. I will begin this document by explaining what diabetes is and all of the different forms that it can exist in. From this point I will highlight the increasing number of children and adolescents who are developing diabetes. Next, I will explain how young people can manage their diet and exercise while at home and at school. Then, I will warn about signs and symptoms that may indicate that blood sugar levels are too high and how young people can keep track of their blood sugar levels using different types of glucose meters. Lastly, I will provide additional resources for young people to use as they continue to live, learn, and manage their diabetes. WC = 178 Reader’s Profile: I imagine a reader skeptical of the accuracy and reliability of a patient guide written by somebody without the medical or personal experience of having diabetes. Reader Response: The information provided is accurate, but it lacks some sort of personal touch. I don’t see a note from the author or any anecdotes about living with diabetes. How can the author write a comprehensive guide about diabetes for young people if he/she has never had the experience? I see that he/she has used credible and trusted sources. I will read through the guide and add my own experiences into what he/she is writing to tailor the guide to my own life.
