FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > How to lead the Technica team

ABSTRACT

This packett serves as a guide to the next co-executive directors for Technica and summarizes the event for 2018 as well as provides an explanation for the grounds of this event and lays down the structure of the team. The percentage of women in the tech industry still stands pretty low and the percentage seeking computer science degrees across America is not going to make it better. This is why conferences such as Grace Hopper was founded - to provide the minority of women in tech a safe place and a community. With the same spirit, the first ever all-women hackathon, Pearl Hacks, was founded 2013. This changed the hackathon community and brought in more women. Similarly, Technica was founded by UMD students in 2015 to change the hackathon scene in the area and went on to become the largest all-women hackathon in the world in 2016 and 2018. Leading the team behind the largest all-women hackathon was an incredible experience and this packet goes through how to form the team and structure it to best utilize university resources and student resources to execute Technica. The timeline goes through and highlights all and big logistical and main tasks to get done before the event, including reserving the venue, applying for funding, marketing, and opening and conducting registration.

READER’S PROFILE : A skeptic reader may question the point of being the largest and try to measure out the benefits of being a smaller hackathon instead to better serve the women in tech community. They may also think the timeline could be better structured and things can be done earlier.

READER’S RESPONSE: The strong integration of the women in tech community into the hackathon scene is definitely better for the tech world and I totally agree with the grounds of why these events take place. I think, however, instead of being the largest gathering of women hackathons, we can focus more on being a quality experience as a smaller hackathon. Downsizing will help organizer and provide a better quality experience especially because it will help the wifi issue a lot. In addition, I think the timeline could be a bit better because I’d like to reserve venue earlier so we can plan around the date and location better.

Thesis/problem statement remains unchanged.
VOICE: A guide with an informal tone since this is for my peers
