FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > NAMSA Website

Abstract:

Our project attempts to create an informative website that resolve existing shortcomings in the University of Maryland’s advising structure for life science students. At present, the pre-health professions advising office dedicates most of its resources to pre-medicine students. As a result, we want to assist students who are interested in other health professions; such as dentistry, veterinary medicine, and physician’s assistantship. In addition, we would like to provide information and resources to life science majors who are interested in other career paths, including research, science policy, and engineering. While we imagine that our primary audience will be University of Maryland students who have questions about life science careers and opportunities, we do expect that students from other universities, and perhaps some eager high school students, will stumble across our website. Thus, while our main objective is to curate resources and information for Maryland students, our website will be general enough as to be applicable to a wide range of students. In terms of structure, our website will break down information on potential avenues to higher education after undergraduate study. The break down will include but not be limited to: the appeal of different higher education options, application preparation, processes, university resources, and advice. All of the information provided will be carefully curated from university, professional organization, governmental and commercial resources.

Reader’s Response:

Reader profile - an individual who is overwhelmed or unsure of what they want to do with their career, resulting in high stress.

Response - The website has lots of useful information, but I don't even know where to begin. I am generally interested in biology and the life science, however I do not know what career field I want to go into. While I see how this could be very useful for a student who already knows what type of career they want, it does not help me very much in narrowing down my options because I have little prior information. To resolve this, the designers of this website might want to include some sort of guiding help function for users who do not know where to begin. Perhaps an introductory page could be included that provides a guide for parsing through the information and resources provided on the website.

Start here for an overview of health professions options
Start here for applied biomedical research at the MS and PhD levels
Start here for life-science engineering MS and PhD programs

Want to shift to policy or management careers that are science based? Start here for some career profiles. Linked there will be some advice on policy programs, administrative career pathways, with a focus on MD state options and federal government options in the metro DC area

How is this?

Your "mapping" of information, with curated referral links is a real service.
