FINAL PROJECT: Abstract and Reader's Reponse > Starting and Sticking with a Strength Training Program for Women

Abstract:
Strength training is an already difficult activity to get into, even without the extra burden that misconceptions and stereotypes put on women in the gym. Some gyms have tried to solve the disparity between guys and girls by altering the gym environment. Gyms like planet fitness strive to make their atmosphere less intimidating by implementing “lunk alarms” and not including squat racks in their gyms. Other gyms exclusively cater to women in order to provide an environment more comfortable for their customers. The purpose of this guide is to give someone everything they need to start strength training; including the confidence to step in the gym and get after it. Everyone is different, some people may not harbor the same reservations about the gym as others. The guide will ideally make even the most timid person with many reservations feel comfortable about going to any gym without need for accommodations. Because while the gyms with friendlier environments are great, they allow people to limit themselves with their own fears. There is a whole world of gyms, fitness, and training out there, this document should be a gateway to that for everyone.

Reader Profile:
Someone convinced that men and women are different and are not meant to work out together. They have many reservations about going to the gym because they fear the worst. Maybe they had a bad experience in the gym which caused them to never go back.

Reader's Response:
I’m not going to lie to you and say that men and women are the same, but I believe we are just similar enough to get along in the gym just fine. People can sometimes be jerks in the gym, but those same people are probably jerks outside of the gym as well. I want to help you realize this because by allowing yourself to be afraid you are limiting yourself from all the great gyms out there and your personal fitness goals.
