Inserting, Removing, and Taking Care of Contact Lenses

The purpose of this assignment is to provide a set of clear-cut instructions on how to insert, remove, and take proper care of contact lenses.

The audience is comprised of contact lens new wearers. These people probably wear glasses, but wish to switch to contact lens for several reasons. For instance, some of these people may be involved in sports and/or activities that require swift movements, such as dance. Also, some people who wear glasses part-time may have a tendency to misplace their glasses. These people may consider getting contact lens to save themselves the hassle and money of getting new glasses. In addition, some of these people may be interested in obtaining colored contacts to temporarily alter the color of their eyes.

These directions are written specifically for first time contact lens wearers. For people who have worn contact lens in the past and are just looking for a quick refresher, these directions may seem slightly repetitive. Contact lens new wearers range from elementary school students to senior citizens, as well as non-fluent English speakers. I use terse sentences and simple vocabulary to accommodate for everyone.

How to Form Dreads Without Mom Hating Them

Audience: For those interested in either having their hair locked or for someone who is being put in the position of having to dread someone’s hair. More specifically these directions are gearing towards people without African textured hair, so the more natural method of "twisting" will not work. Only people interested in making nice looking, faster maturing dreads will want to follow this particular method, there are slightly easier methods but they will yield messier results.

Context: The backcombing method of dreading hair, for people don’t know how to properly dread hair, most particularly those not of African American decent whose hair does not naturally lock. How to care for new dreads so that they fully lock/mature without getting massively tangled or frayed. This is not for people who are trying to let their hair knot up naturally, the hippie way, but people who want to make their dreads look neat and beautiful.

Purpose: To let people know an effective way to lock hair. This method is also one of the only, if not the only, way to dread your hair that will allow you to brush them out again when you are finished with them. Most other methods require you to cut off your dreads, with the backcombing method, young people can ease the fears of their parents by letting them know it doesn't have to be permanent.

Pierogi Recipe

This pierogi recipe is perfect for anyone looking to cook a new and unique dish. The recipe may also benefit women who would like to impress their Ukrainian in-laws. The layout of this recipe is a simple numbered format in first person and easy to follow. I chose to write the recipe in first person because the recipe is easier to follow in the first voice. My recipe is divided into three sections. In the front matter, I briefly explain the pierogi and the origin of the food. The heart of the recipe is in the preparation and numbered steps. In the back matter, I acknowledge the source and conclude the recipe with a recommended side dish. I chose to write the pierogi recipe in order to keep Ukrainian culture in my family. I hope to pass on this recipe to others and to cook it for my children.

A Novice’s Guide to Antique Military Sword Identification
By D.

Audience:
My directions are for people who know very little about antique swords. The people who read these directions would not have held a sword before. The only swords that they have seen would be in movies and behind glass museum showcases.

Context:
A person will use my instructions when he or she possesses a sword that lacks any “background history.” This person may inherit the sword from a deceased relative. Or a sword is found hidden away in a house that this individual recently purchased. The sword’s “new owner” now wants to find out information on the sword. However, the person who previously owned the sword is no longer available to answer questions concerning the sword.

Purpose:
My directions will help individuals unfamiliar with swords conduct a basic assessment of their sword. In my directions, I educate the reader on the different parts of a sword, along with the most common sword types. After looking over the sword and noting key, distinguishing features, the novice sword owner will now have a better idea of the type and age of his or her sword. With this newly acquired information, the sword’s owner can now do a more effective internet search for information on the sword. Should the sword’s owner later talk to a sword expert, he or she will know what information to tell the sword expert so that the expert can accurately determine the sword’s pattern, authenticity, and value. After learning about the type, age, nationality, and value of the sword, the sword’s owner could then decide what to do with the sword. He or she may decide to either keep the sword and have the sword preserved, or sell the sword to a sword collector or antiques arms dealer.

How to Cut a Board on a Table Saw:

Context: I currently work as a shop employee at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s (CSPAC) production shop. This shop builds the props and set pieces for all performances produced by CSPAC. Many employees coming into the shop do not have experience with big power tools, and most learn on the job. I learned how to use a table saw during my employ, and realized many details (such as blade height and angle) should really be stressed in the instruction.

Audience: This set of directions targets newer shop employees who have not used the table saw before, or who perhaps need some reminding of proper table saw use. New employees have probably watched or assisted a co-worker using the table saw, and they probably have a good idea of how to use it (i.e. where to stand, how to push the wood, where the “on” button is, etc.). For this reason, diagrams of a table saw are not necessary, since the directions reference objects the employee has already seen.

Purpose: Newer employees are likely to miss small details, such as adjusting the blade first, unless given specific instruction. “How to cut a board on a table saw” incorporates important details into the instructions to help avoid mishaps. For instance, reminding the user to adjust the blade angle prevents a board being cut at 45 degrees instead of 90. The purpose of these directions is to give slightly knowledgeable employees a better sense of what their doing, and to stress safety precautions to avoid nicked fingers and flying boards.

How to Make Your Bed

The intended audience of my directions assignment is young adults. Many high school and college students do not make their beds, and need to be made aware of the benefits of making their bed. Making your bed adds to the cleanliness of your room and makes your bed more comfortable when you crawl in for a nap or to sleep for the night. Making your bed also reminds you to change and wash your sheets. This is very important because many college students sleep on dirty sheets and some students even get into their bed wearing the clothes they wore outside all day. A dirty bed is not a pleasant sleeping environment. Having the best bed possible is important because the average person spends about one third of their life sleeping.

Directions for Using GLX pH Meter

The directions to calibrate the GLX pH meter are intended for students in Chemistry 272 lab or any other chemistry lab using the meter. The directions are intended for beginners, who have never used the meter before, and for those who have trouble calibrating it despite frequent use. I am providing these directions because the directions available to me were incomplete and misleading. I have improved that set of directions to include all the information and all the correct steps. The directions provided now allow correct use of the meter, and prevent the anxiety caused by miscalculated data. I have created these directions from my own experiences with the meter. There is very slight resemblance to the directions provided from the professor.

Audience/Context/Purpose Analysis
The audience of this directions paper is amateur operators of CHN/O Analyzers. Amateur operators include:
• People who have never used the machine before.
• People who have used the machine long time ago but cannot recall instructions.
• People who are currently using the machine but want to have a written direction to ensure quality of their work.
CHN/O Analyzers can be found in research laboratories such as plant and environmental science laboratories. Research laboratories are usually about the size of two medium-sized bedrooms. The analyzer will be located on a desk at the right corner. An autobalance will be on the same desk connected to the analyzer. The autobalance is used to measure the weights of samples and transferring the samples to the analyzer.
This paper is designed to help an amateur operator to run CHN/O Analyzer properly without wasting the valuable experimental samples. Operating a CHN/O Analyzer is not hard but certainly requires patience and care. Please read the directions thoroughly and follow steps one-by-one to ensure quality of work.
The main source for the directions will be Perkin’s CHN/O Analyzer manual and tips I learned from my supervisor, Dr. Timlin. Important points from the manual will be taken and rewritten into few bullet points for short and effective steps.
Formal voice will be used throughout the directions. This is to ensure that the operator is focusing on the manual. Because many parts of the equipments are fragile, the operator must concentrate while running the machine.

How to Throw an Effective Punch

Audience:

I intend to write for those interested in self-defense or those just beginning to study martial arts or other combat sports.

Context:

This information is presented as a guide to performing a simple punching combination, a “one-two.” The directions are written in 2nd person with the assumption that the reader is physically able to perform the necessary steps. Other types of strikes and their uses will also be discussed.

Purpose:

Beginners in self-defense or martial arts often display improper form in their striking. Ineffective striking may result in injury. By learning the correct way to execute a simple combination, a “one-two,” a novice can establish proper striking habits and avoid potential injuries.

Audience: Someone who wants to try cooking a caribbean dish, maybe to impress a guest that is from one of the islands or after having visited an island. Has to have a basic understanding of cooking terms and equipment. My reader won’t be a master chef, but more likely someone just trying the dish at home in their regular kitchen. I will have to explain a little background on conch and how to get conch because it is not local to Maryland.

Context: Simple informal language with a few cooking terms and measurements give the reader a very simple and quick understanding of what to do.

Purpose: To teach how to cook conch fritters and make its sauce in a simple, straight forward and quick way. I give enough detail and substitutes so that they have an understanding of how to prepare the meal without giving extra information. The layout is simple ad follows logical thinking of how to cook, information, preparation, than cooking.
