Post Here: Definition Topic/Audiences/Exigence > Association of Osteonecrosis and Osteoporosis in HIV-1-infected Patients.

Definition topic. Osteopenia and osteoporosis are very common in HIV-1- infected individuals and represents a challenge in clinical and therapeutic management. The mechanism underlying the degeneration process of bone has not yet been determined. Whether bone dysfunction is linked to antiretroviral therapies like Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) is inconclusive. Hence, I am planning to write an informative review based on the researches done on side effects of HIV medicines. I will mostly focus my review on association between HIV therapies and bone diseases.
Technical audience-
Researchers, people working with HIV patients like doctor and nurses, and pharmaceutical companies.
Lay audience-
HIV- infected patients, and other people who wants to get information about the side effects of HIV medications (therapies).
Exigence -
The advent of HAART has significantly extended the life- span of patients living with AIDS. Scientists believe that the increase in average life expectancy has given rise to the long term complications like metabolic complications, cardiovascular diseases, and osteoporosis. There are currently over 30 million people infected with HIV, and osteoporosis is more common in HIV- infected persons compared to HIV-uninfected controls. Is HIV therapies like HAART are the reasons for osteoporosis? Or there are other reasons like hepatic fibrosis and inflammation which could lead to a lower bone mineral density among HIV infected patients.
