Refining your thesis/problem statement

in ABT format.  Enter yours here, in class.  Add initials at end.  Note:  your ABT statement will appear in the first three paragraphs of your document to announce the information and "job" of the document.

For Monday, we have an in-class post to me about structure/arguments.  See examples here.

Have your collected all your documents for this class?  You need to turn in them in a final folder.

Next up, audience analysis sheet (perhaps the most important guidance document yet for your final project). we will complete this in class on Wednesday and print out. I have a hard copy for you to draft with.  The link includes a MSWord document that you can type in.

More here on completing the class.

A comment on grades and the pivot or seesaw at this point in the semester (in class).

Some audience resources, for this time in the semester (glance at them before Wednesday):

Catching up!

Directions due Monday, where in class we will have our final peer review.  By Friday, you need to have a final project proposal. READ THESE SAMPLES.  You will post something similar.  More information on how to do that on Friday.  I suggest drafting in MSWord, GoogleDoc, and even a text editor.  Details on Posting in class.

Monday after TGbreak?  Sorry! BUT, seven item annotated bibliography.

Here is an assignment sheet to guide your directions. IGNORE THE REFERENCE TO BOOKS AT THE BEGINNING. All you need to know is on that sheet, on our examples, and discussed in class.

Monday; sorry!

I have strep!  I am glad I did not shed bacteria to our classroom and possibly to you. Will be there on Wednesday. Try to have your documents done and we can print in class.  I will answer questions BUT I ask you to work through the guides below about:

  • designing your document
  • revising your text of the review based on class work AND my comments.

Here is a google doc on what we would have done today, to polish your design.  Much more efficient to show rather than tell, but sometimes what we have are words.

I will try to answer questions as the antibiotics kick in.

See you on Wednesday.

Designing the review: looks and formatting and platform

In class this week and next, we will re-design the review, allowing for revision opportunities. This is what we aim at (note: not an exemplar but a flawed piece for discussion. Here is a checklist for what needs to happen in this assignment.

You will need three or four images for Friday; bring them as jpgs or png files.  Candidates?

  • journal cover
  • web logo from journal site
  • images of lead authors (NEED evidence of permission)
  • visuals from the articles
  • quotes from article designed into a pull quote
  • useful figure from government or open access website

Designed, revised article review due on  ....TBD.

We also need to think about directions (due end of next week, TBD).  We will look at some examples to get you started.

Cougar (model)

Fencing (pictures important BUT....)

Bones of the Dead (model)

JoVE

Lesson on commas! Video article (five types) from Mental Floss. Or access the 1 1/2 minute piece on YouTube.
