Small assignments continued (please, come to class)

Today, you turn in your annotated bib of seven sources.  Friday?  Turn in your audience analysis sheet.

These assignments are in hard copy!

Detail here on both of these assignments.

Let's talk about audience, with four examples, all focused on definitions concerning saliva.  Again.  As we have been doing all semester.  Audience, context, purpose: keys to a successful final project.

You can look at a range of definition-based documents concerning "growth mindset," from Carol Dweck.

---

Hint for Friday:  problem statement or these statement.  In each case, you need to establish the problem or gap in the literature/field; then, write a sentence or two about how your document address these situatons.

For next week?  Structures and arguments (shape, opening, closing, definitions/descriptions, etc). Due on Tuesday, December 6, in a digital post by noon.

Then abstract and title PLUS reader's response, citation style, and a good title. Due by midnight, on Friday, December 9.

Final project and folder?  On Friday, I will have a sheet for you to use (hard copy).

Turn in your final project, in addition to the folder:

  • Magnus Opus Final Project  due to me MONDAY, December 19 NO LATER than 3:00PM
  • TAWES Rm 1230.  I will be waiting.

Also, I will add office hours daily, beginning Monday, December 5, typically between 11 and 1.

Friday, designing a doc in MSWord

Here is a re-post of the checklist for your two-article review.  If you did not earn an A, then please review this with your paper BEFORE Wednesday.  In class on Monday and Wednesday, we will re-design the review, allowing for revision opportunities. This is what we aim at (a sample for discussion!). Here is a checklist for what needs to happen in this assignment.

You will need three or four images for Monday; bring them as jpgs.  Candidates?

  • journal cover (two articles, two covers)
  • web logo from journal site
  • images of lead authors (NEED evidence of permission)
  • visuals from the articles
  • quotes from article designed into a pull quote
  • useful figure from government or open access website

Designed, revised two-article review due on Friday. November 18. We will also talk about your final project (HUGE leeway here).

Directions and document design

Document design and directions (the next assignment):

Here is a guide to planning the directions assignment. We divide the material into three sections:  front matter, the heart of the directions (numbered, ordered commands), and back matter.

Directions, like the resume, rely on "document design."  The way we arrange the material for the audience, context, and purpose is as important as the content.

Audience/Context/Purpose -- essential aspects of all documents.  In designing directions or procedures documents, think of the audience as a user more than areader.

Sample of a directions document:  Surviving a Cougar Attack

What about expanding recipies?  Consider Bones of the Dead.

.Let's look at some multi-media ways to instruct:

For Friday, please have two ideas for directions writings.  We will start them in class, working through them all next week.  Due on WEDNESDAY November 9 for Peer review and FOR A GRADE on FRIDAY, November 11.

--

Next up?  Redisign your two-article review, final project, and cover/letter and resume.
